We believe that habitat and recreation can coexist and enhance one another. Parks and trails raise environmental awareness, promote protection, and are part of healthy lifestyles and a sustainable future. Our recreation planning services include:

Children’s Playgrounds

The opportunity to play creatively in high-quality environments is essential to the development of children. Through their play they acquire skills and abilities which can be learned. The quality of what we provide affects the quality of what children learn. The greater the complexity of that environment the greater the quality of the learning. Equipment should be age appropriate and match developmental needs – as well as being engaging to play on. Younger children like sand-play, swinging, climbing, and sliding – but they are small and items should be scaled accordingly. Older children like more exciting equipment – large group swings, cable runways, roundabouts, etc. They want places where they can sit and talk; places for skateboards and bicycles; flat areas for ball games, running and active play.

Access Analysis & Universal Design

Recreation programs that exceed minimum accessibility standards to accommodate a wide spectrum of users is considered universal design. Universal design pushes the envelope of accessible design in the concrete, physical and built environment.  Cosmos Associates designed the first fully accessible park in Massachusetts at Dunn Pond State Park in Gardner, MA. All park and playground facilities we design meet or exceed the highest accessible design standards.

Outdoor/ Active & Passive Recreation:

Cosmos Associates has designed many active recreation facilities including track, baseball, basketball, football, and soccer fields throughout New England. Please check our work online.

Passive recreation facilities have included two Olmsted Parks restorations in Lowell, MA. Under the state funded Town Commons program we completed the Natick Town Common and Winthrop Square Park in Brockton. Numerous other passive parks have been completed throughout New England.

Some of our service areas are: Weston, Wellesley, Natick, Needham, Wayland, Framingham, Dover and Sherborn, Boston.
